A step above the ordinary

Created in 1937 for Elsa Schiaparelli’s winter 1937–38 collection, the shoe hat turned the outline of an upturned high-heeled pump into headwear. Her collaboration with Salvador Dalí brought Surrealist displacement into Paris couture.

Amber light falls across a bare plaster mannequin head, a round wooden block, black cloth, shears, pins, brushes and cream paper beside a window overlooking rooftops. Close-up of a black jacket pocket embroidered with glossy red lips, resting on cream tissue beside sewing pins. Ivory fabric printed with a large red lobster and small green sprigs drapes across cream tissue in warm light. A black felt hat on a plaster head has an elongated toe over the forehead and an upturned heel rising behind the crown.

The story behind the mystery

The object was a high-heeled shoe. Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dalí turned its outline upside down and made it into a hat in 1937. Even better, the spark came from a photograph Gala had taken four years earlier: Dalí wore one woman’s shoe on his head and another on his shoulder. An absurd pose became couture. [Palais Galliera](https://palaisgallierashowroom.paris.fr/rubrique2.html) The finished creation was shaped in wool, rather than simply being footwear balanced on someone’s hair. It belonged with a black dress and jacket embroidered with red lips, a detail the Met links to actress Mae West. Imagine assembling that outfit: the pockets supplied the smile, and the head supplied the heel. [The Met](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/83437) The trick is instantly understandable even without knowing the designers: take something utterly familiar, move it to the wrong part of the body, and suddenly everybody looks twice. The scrapbook images are original artistic reconstructions of the documented setting and design details, not archival photographs.

The soundtrack

Guss Griswold — Erik Satie - Gymnopedie No 1 (Royalty Free). A later electronic rendition of Satie’s piano piece, made by Guss Griswold in Reason 5. It is a thematic French musical companion to the Paris setting, with no documented connection to the hat or its presentation.
