A revolution by the stem
On 25 April 1974, Portugal's Armed Forces Movement overthrew the Estado Novo dictatorship. Civilian support helped turn a military operation into a revolution whose enduring symbol was a flower placed in a soldier's rifle. Democratic institutions emerged through a difficult subsequent transition.
The story behind the mystery
The flowers were supposed to go to restaurant customers. Instead, they helped name a revolution. On 25 April 1974, Portuguese troops moved to overthrow the Estado Novo dictatorship. The restaurant where Celeste Caeiro worked had bought carnations for its first anniversary, but closed that day. She left with some of the unused flowers. What she could offer was a flower. [Caeiro's testimony](https://www.dn.pt/5227122553/onde-eu-estava-ha-50-anos-por-celeste-caeiro) Carnations placed in rifle barrels became the unforgettable emblem of civilian support for the uprising. [RTP Archives](https://media.rtp.pt/ashorasdecisivasdeabril/) The overthrow opened Portugal's path toward democratic government. A restaurant celebration had supplied an extraordinary public symbol. The soundtrack
Skullptures — Grândola, Vila Morena. This 2021 electric-guitar rendition was arranged and performed by Skullptures. It reinterprets José Afonso's song, used as the second radio signal for the uprising. It is a later performance, not the historical broadcast.
